Hi all! I am 25 and have just found out I'm likely to be made redundant from my office job by June time 2021. This has made me have a bit of a life rethink and I'm now really keen to go back to uni and retrain as a teacher.

My main question is around experience. I have experience working with young people as I did a paired reading scheme at high school during my 5th and 6th years at high school. I don't have any classroom shadowing experience however. Do I need this? Has anyone successfully been accepted for the PGDE without direct classroom experience? (Am aiming for UWS if that makes a difference).

Thanks all!

Hello Tarynnosaurus

You do not need any classroom experience to be offered a place on a teacher training course. However, if you are able to get some, it will help to a. Confirm that you do want to become a teacher, b. Confirm that you are choosing to train in the best phase (Primary/Secondary) and subject for you, and c. Straighten your application.

For help with getting relevant experience and support to make an application for a teacher training course, register with Get into Teaching. You'll be offered a Teacher Training adviser who is a qualified and experienced teacher, as well as being an expert in making successful teacher training course applications.

Wishing you all the best, Jane
