Science student wants to wear the veil (Niqab)... Help!

I am currently a life science student and I am planning to work in a laboratory in the future. If I wear the veil (Niqab) what sort of problems would I face working in the science field? As a science field, I am not sure how open and are willing to accept. Especially because they usually use Health and Safety Hazard as an excuse...

I don't know many sisters that wear the veil and work in a laboratory and even if you are not necessarily from the Hijabi gang any advice would be appreciated. I just want to make an informed decision before taking a big step.

Side Note: If you plan to leave a toxic comment please don't. If you have a question out of curiosity please ask. If you can give advice please help.

Go for it! It shouldn't logistically be a problem (you can just tuck it in to your shirt/lab coat when doing work), but unfortunately there will be inevitably be people who will comment and sneer at it.

We are all citizens of a diverse society that promotes freedom, choice and expression of identity, so why should someone who chooses to cover their face not be allowed to express their religious and spiritual identity? If I were you, I'd go in headfirst and prove to people that wearing a veil can't stop you from chasing your dreams and being successful.

When I did a quick google of the issue, I came across this lady.
Please don't let what people say stop you from doing what you want to do!

If you have any other problems, I know you've posted anonymously, but feel free to PM me

You dont believe it could in fact be a health and safety issue? You believe it is an anti muslim conspiracy. If you have evidence of this you can take them to court.
So what are these supposed Health and Safety 'excuses' thar you have been told, as opposed to what you have to adhere to by law?

in a religion where 52% of its adherents (in the UK) think homosexuality should be illegal btw
im not sure why lefties suck up to them

But I fail to see the relevance of your point. This doesn't mean that she can't wear what she wants. Just as a gay person should be entitled to wear what they want.

Debate is not allowed here.

The reason why someone wants to wear something is irrelevant if there is a valid Health and Safety concern.

Sorry I was unaware of that rule.

In response to that, fair enough.

Ignoring the haters, I am sure you will be fine so long as you tuck it in your lab coat. As for those who makes comments (clearly even in this thread they do), just ignore them and tell them to mind their own business instead.

Thank you very much! Your words are very encouraging. Thank you for sharing the story - I am not the best when it comes to research so that helped a lot.

Working in an evidence-based field, whilst wearing clothing representing superstition, is a little odd. If it works practically, I don't see an issue.

Hi @RogerOxen,
Personally I am not planning to wear it for any superstitional reason. To me personally, it is the next step in my faith rather than any cultural superstition. Also, thanks for your input

No, I don't necessarily see it as an anti-muslim conspiracy. Also, I haven't had any incidents where I can take anyone to court... thank God.

I understand the argument that it could be a health and safety issue but I also see that there are ways to avoid the veil(Niqab) creating a hazard such as pinning it etc... something similar to when girls have long hair the requirement would be to tie it back.

But other than it being a health and safety hazard are there any potential problems? Thanks for your input:redface:

I think if the fabric is flammable there might be an issue, especially if it isn't tight-fitting(i.e. loose and could possibly get undone)
And sometimes we have to compromise for health and safety, such as now, we all have to wear masks, or people with long hair need to tie it back etc. It isn't an excuse, it's to keep everyone safe.

That's true! But other than the Health & safety concern. Do you have any other idea what problems could arise?
Thanks for your input so far!

Thanks a lot for sharing your insight! I understand where you are coming from. The question still remains other than health & safety can you see any specific problems that I may need to consider? Thanks a lot for your time!

It's not just the niqab that's the hazard, how is it compatible with wearing PPE? You can't keep wasting time putting on and taking off your niqab during the work day.
