Ten Miles to a New World (2020/21 GYG)

Oh God, my least favourite bit, the introduction...

Er. Hi. Welcome to my fourth(!) GYG blog. I'm Midnight (well, obviously not really, but I'd prefer not use my real name), an 18 year old guy from South Wales, and I'm off to uni this year- Swansea, to be exact (which is only about 10 miles from where I live- hence my title). I'm immensely excited but, obviously, scared as hell about so many things in this wonderful time of corona. Not that I'm letting that ruin my time- as an introvert at heart the idea of going to uni and then immediately crowding into a sweaty loud nightclub and spending a whole week constantly around people is close enough to my idea of hell, so I'm actually kinda glad about the changes for this year...though I am looking forward to meeting new people in person, I admit, after 6 months of relative seclusion.

(Oh, I'm doing chemistry. Kind of shoulda mentioned that earlier)

ABOUT ME

Er. I play piano. I got my grade 8 in it in December. I like reading and I like a variety of types of music. If you couldn't tell, I'm struggling to think of anything even vaguely interesting about myself. Errrrrrr I used to run but then I gave up so now I'm v unfit and need to do more exercise which maybe I'll do in uni or maybe I'll just drink idk I have a can of Thatchers rn as I write this if that's anything.
OH. A note. As well as a GYG this will more than likely turn in to a mental health recovery blog- long story short, I've struggled with my mental health since mid-2018 and it did get better last year for a time but this year I've majorly crashed (majorly? Is that a word?) and now I'm on meds and working toward getting better, so now you know.
(That was supposed to be in a spoiler but TSR is breaking on me now and doing really weird editing things so I give up)

I think that's everything? I'm not sure, maybe I'll add to this if I think of more, but in the meantime, thanks for finding this, hope you enjoy. I'm hoping to keep to a twice-a-week schedule but we shall see. Also, more pictures this year, maybe.

Now...stop procrastinating on here and get back to work.

So it's the 3rd of September and I still don't actually know when I'm moving in. This is ridiculous, but I've had correspondence to tell me that arrivals will be staggered and we'll have to book timeslots but still cannot do so. It's so close to the start of term now. Very anxious. I'm going on a zoom call with people on my course this afternoon so maybe I'll ask there if anyone has more of an idea than I do.

I know all 7 others who I'll be in a flat with, though, so that's nice, and we have a wider group chat for the floor, which might serve more purpose if social distancing is scaled back later in the year. Either way, it's very nice to have met everyone online already.

The university is spending £230,000 on events over the next six months, apparently, which is nice, and allows for more in-person things than I previously thought, including a partly in-person Freshers' Fair, potentially. I'm looking forward to seeing what's happening and knowing of some events for Freshers' Week as a whole, but haven't had anything on this yet, other than that there's an in-person event with the chemistry department on the Tuesday or the Wednesday weather dependent.

I haven't even begun to review my chemistry notes yet but I will look over the most essential things tomorrow, and into next week, ready to start. It still hasn't sunk in that I'll be an undergrad in 3 weeks. I was lying awake last night feeling pretty ill (am ok now) thinking how in three weeks it would be my first student night and yet it feels far away yet. Can't quite believe how close it is.

Thanks to everyone who's already replied, PRSOM if I haven't repped and hope you enjoy following this year!

edit: I've just been round the other uni blogs and I really need to get someone else to make up a title for me next year
edit #2: my tag list just broke please bear with, I don't know what's happening

Errr here's attempt 2 at making a tag list that doesn't format really weirdly with all the computer code formatting appearing for some reason, apologies to those now tagged twice today :ashamed2:

lol idk when I'm moving into uni either 😅 I really want to know as well! At least you know who you're in a flat with 👍
Hopefully you’ll have more clarity about moving in soon :h:

Hey Midnight, can you keep me tagged please?

Sorry to hear about the lack of clarity with regards to when you can move into your uni accommodation, hopefully you'll find out very soon! It's good that you already know those you'll be sharing a flat with.
keep me tagged:smile:

Yo I'd like tagging.

First time it really stuck in to my head that "oh damn I'm about to be doing uni stuff" was the massive Asda shop the week before moving in. Meeting people in your accommodation is a good antidote to any potential homesickness.

I hope you find out soon! Weirdly, I found out an hour or two after I wrote the email, I’m moving on the 16th

Will do so! That makes sense, I need to head over to Morrisons next week for a big uni shop

So I moved in yesterday. And this is so strange. I cannot believe I'm writing this from my uni room and I'm not quite sure what to put in this update.

My flatmates are great, there's 8 of us and technically we've all "moved in" but 2 have gone back home this week and will move in properly on Saturday so there's 6 of us here right now.

We all went to the beach last night but we are good people and even while drunk (well, mostly me, actually) we remembered to clean up and be sensible. Weather's still nice so we're going back tonight after dark. Earlier on today we went to the Singleton Botanical Gardens which were quite nice, a nice few hours out with everyone, but ngl slightly underwhelming, kinda expected more for some reason? Idk. Anyway, tomorrow then we're all planning on going into town and we're debating whether to walk or get the bus. It's about 40 mins away on foot and I'm in favour of walking there and getting a bus back because I don't want to carry everything I need (and I need a good bit, I'm not even going into how much I straight up forgot to buy) for the whole 40 minute walk.

I have a corner room, which means slightly more space and two windows rather than one, although whether I'll be able to keep any open from tonight is another matter because the giant freshers makeshift marquee thing that's got lots of socially distant tables in it is basically right below the window and I don't even know how loud it's going to be.

First chemistry induction event is Monday, then something else Tuesday and then something else Friday, which will be in a larger group due to Welsh rules still stipulating that events of up to 30 can occur outdoors so they're using that for something or other I'm not entirely sure.

Anyway, I'm back off again. I've got a couple of things I need to do, although I've got plenty of time to do them because we're not going anywhere until it's dark anyway. Hope things are going well for you all!
