1. (i) Calculate the discriminant of 2x^2 + 3x − 1.

Can anyone tell me what the discriminant is?

If you think of the quadratic equation, the descriminant is the b^2 - 4ac. In this case if you plug the numbers in the descrimenant is 17. If the descrimenant is possitive this tells you that the graph has 2 roots. If the answer is = to 0 the graph has 1 root, and if the answer is negative, the graph has no roots. Hope this has helped.
