MMU Met Card

Hi, I’m starting at MMU this year, and I was wondering about the met card.
How much money does it have on it?
I’ve read different sources, some say I only get £20 from the uni and then I have to top up, or is there more money on there?
I’d like to know so that I can try to save up money for a laptop and then top up my card. I know I could check my balance on Met card website , but I’ve tried to log in and it’s not letting me, keeps saying error.
Any information you may have will be appreciated, I just want some clarity

if you are entitled to the student support package then your met card will be automatically topped up with £375 on 16th October and then again in term 2.

Not sure if I am legible as I’m doing a foundation year this year.
So does this mean that to buy a laptop from the student store, I have to top up money myself to be able to buy from it right?
The money isn’t given by the university, it’s my money being used to pay for the laptop through my Met card

i have just read this on mmu website -

"That’s why we have launched our unique student support package - £750, every year of your undergraduate degree. It’s not a loan - you don’t have to repay it - and it doesn’t affect other scholarships and bursaries".

You are eligible if you are:

a new UK undergraduate or foundation year student, with a student support number from Student Finance
from a household with an income of up to and including £25,000
paying the full rate of tuition fees

Hope this helps

Thank you so much again for replying, so fast as well.
I went and read it too, and they’ll email me at the start of the course about it.
I am sorry to ask so many questions, but I feel a little disappointed now because I may have had a very wrong interpretation of what was said on the Met card site.
When I click on the IT section where you can buy a laptop/tablet etc. It says ‘Please not that I’m the agreement with the university, your met card can only be used to make purchases up to the value of £2000 per year from the site’
When I first read it 2 weeks ago, I thought oh wow so I get to have a laptop up to the that value, I had the perception that I was able to get any laptop as long as the total price was below £2000, for some reason I didn’t think that the money would have to come from me, I genuinely just thought that on that site as long as I didn’t get anything over the price of £2000, I could choose anything.
I then started browsing and got my hopes up to get a Mac book air, which I obviously cannot afford on my own, and asking my parents for that money would be so silly of me.
Most of my maintenance loan will go off to accommodations and commuting to uni from there, as well as food.
So what I’m basically trying to ask is, my perception was wrong wasn’t it? In order to buy from that site I’d have to use my own money that I’d top up in the Met card

to be honest you will find better deals at currys for laptops, you will also find a lot of your metcard funds will go on books needed for your course. Do you mind me asking what you are studying? I know i ended yup spending over £200 last year in blackwells.

Hi @seeesndat

No, the Met Cards no longer exist I'm afraid. If you need financial support advice I would advise you contact our Student Financial Support team on 0161 247 1045. You can also refer to the following webpage: Manchester Met: funding your studies.

I hope this helps.
Mel 😊
