I am going to University of Birmingham and will be living in Selly Oak. I have just discovered that the street where mt accommodation is has the highest crime rate. I am very scared since I am a girl aeound 5ft honestly I have to admit I can't defend myself physically since I am quite weak. It is most likely some of my lectures will finish at 5pm since I will study medicine and I will have to go shopping for groceries late. I am very scared

Go with a friend.
Be alert and avoid people.
Have a rape alarm.
Dont carry valuables or too many.
Go to a personal safety self defence class at uni.

If its that bad you can have online groceries delivered or share an uber with a housemate.

Your best defence is avoiding risky situations in the first place.

Have a look on your uni page for something like this.

I doubt its that dangerous if you just use your brain and make sure you are aware.

Find alternative accommodation and explain your reasoning of why you want to move elsewhere.

Else, you'll need to heavily rely on friends as the above user mentioned.

Any city has high crime rates, I live in Oxford (city centre - where colleges are based) has a very high crime rate - but i bet you would not refuse a place there.

put things in perspective and do not put yourself into situations, i am female and live in Selly Oak and have never felt threatened, if i go out at night shopping then a few of us will go from the block or I go alone in the day - there are lots of ways around it.
Don't let the fear of being mugged stop you enjoying your time at uni it goes so fast

Hi,
I'm currently living in Selly Oak. What I can recommend is that you should definitely have a look at any Guild's events (self-defense) like this past one, for example: https://www.guildofstudents.com/ents/event/4168/
Also, I recommend you to join Facebook groups:

Selly Oak B29 Community
Fab N Fresh - New

People inform each other about any incidents or suspicious people on different streets.

For more advice, check the Guild's website: https://www.guildofstudents.com/supp...entors/safety/

I hope that helps!
Stay safe,

-Karolina
