Police force

Hi everyone, I’m going to be 18 next
month and am currently at sixth form studying law, criminology and sociology.
When I leave college, I want to join the police. It is something I’ve always wanted to do and I just think why not?
I’m not too sure what I want to go into, but I like the idea of detective work, dog handling etc.
Has anyone got any advice on joining the police?
For example, should I go to uni and get a degree?
What should I expect when joining the police ?
What’s the salary like ?
Recommended roles?
Any information would be really appreciated.
Can’t wait to hear from you all.
Thank you  xx

Hello, firstly, it’s great to know what you want to do!
A family friend’s daughter is going to Birmingham uni before joining the police - I believe it’s a prerequisite now to have a degree, but I could be wrong? However some police forces from 2021 I believe she said are taking on recruits, whilst also letting them studying for their degree whilst working - I assume like a day release?
Police pay is pretty standard across the UK, you can google to see.
I’d also suggest phoning or popping into your local force to see if you can meet a recruitment officer or training officer to give you some more insight.
It’s a varied career, so I wish you well next year.

If you don't have a degree then you would be applying for an apprenticeship with the police which takes 3 years. You cannot specialise in a role until after probation which wouldn't be until after your apprenticeship. At that point you would have more of an idea of what you are interested in and the roles available to you.
