SAE Extra: Environment Design Workflow and Fundamentals - Animation Masterclass on 11 September

On 11 September from 1.00 - 2.30 pm we are hosting an environment design workflow and fundamentals animation masterclass with concept artist and art director, Jason Pickthall.

What will the SAE Extra event involve?

In the talk, Jason will explore what makes a good composition, covering the rule of thirds, background, mid ground and foreground elements. By demonstrating an original piece of environment art, Jason will start with thumbnail sketches by selecting the correct one and following it through to final key art production.

He will then focus on scale and creating a believable world with a compelling narrative. Techniques include rough sketching and using 3D software, proving that you don’t have to be a concept artist to design a compelling layout. There will be a chance for the attendees to win a signed print of the bespoke artwork Jason will be breaking down in the session!

Who is Jason Pickthall?

Jason has a background in product design and 20 years experience in the games industry. He started out as a 3D artist at all levels up to lead, working on platforms generation from PSX/PC through to PS3 and Xbox 360.

After this, Jason went into concept art where he went on to be lead concept artist at Freestyle Games (Activision) on Guitar Hero Live (PS4 and Xbox one), also helping out on some Call of Duty and Skylander projects for the broader Activision group.

From there Jason went on to be Lead Concept Artist at Rare (Microsoft Studio) where he led the effort on Sea of Thieves as well as Everwild pre production.
