both maintain concentration gradient of oxygen to maximise absorption, as well as expulsion of carbon dioxide.
both require ATP for gas exchange
Fish absorb the naturally dissolved oxygen in water through gills, using a counter-current mechanism. (water flows through the lamellae in the gills in the opposite direction to the blood)
Humans breathe air as the surface area of alveoli is not enough to supply the entire body with sufficient oxygen.
Fish have a unidirectional flow of water through the gills
Mammals have tidal ventilation
