No, mini-fridges are not allowed in rooms, and cleaners are supposed to report you if they find them.
That said, you might be able to get away with keeping one; it depends on how nice your cleaner is and what your relationship is like with them.

also if im on a 30 week let (dunno yet as they havent given me a room!) do i have to totally clear out my entire room every single holiday... are they really going to rent out my room?! who would live there by choice.

Yes, you have to clear it out every holiday, though there's some lockable storage space in your room that you can store a small amount of stuff in (I kept my kitchen stuff there).
It's possible, though by no means guaranteed that they'll rent/use your room for conference guests etc.

hi, im goin to warwick on the 27th (if i ever get an accomadation offer) and was wondering what the policy is on mini-fridges in rooms, ive not been able to find and info on this so far, are they allowed?

Welcome to TSR lol - I hope I've popped your quote cherry :p:

Basically, you have an allotted wattage to your room, and certain things can fuse the supply to your room, leaving you - literally - powerless. Hoovers, toasters, some lamps, big sound systems, hairdryers, kettles etc etc all have a tendancy to misbehave in this regard.

We had a similar policy in the Halls I lived in in Manchester for 2 years - but I had a mini fridge. (I also had a halogen lamp, kettle, hairdryer, sound system, and a PET lol)

The main worry of the halls is fire hazard. I don't think they'd go looking round purposefully for people with banned equipment, but they could confiscate it. If you really want it then keep hold of it and hide it till the Freshers' Week(s) are over.

Interesting fact:
Noone, not even staff, can enter your room without 24 hours written notice. That's legal. So if you get a letter saying your room is going to be inspected, then hide it lol.

They have to give you 24hrs written notice at LEAST.

That's how I got away with keeping two mice and a hamster for two years, not to mention the halogen lamps, minifridges, toastie makers etc.

Just don't do anything wrong in the first few weeks and be nice to the cleaners.

Are you sure about the leagality of that spacecam, after all I'm sure they would put a get out clause allowing them to inspect in the Tennets Agreement they get you to sign.

If you're right, which I am not saying your not, then that is very interesting, and makes them kind of powerless.

^^It was the policy at The University of Manchester (Dalton Ellis Hall).

Although they were really sly about it - you never seemed to get the letter.

I dunno about a getout clause, but having got on really well with the Senior Warden for the University, they do seem pretty powerless yes. That said, not many students know what I've just said - so they manipulate that to their advantage.

Of course, breaking rules is bbaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaadddddd.

Very bad  and you should not do it .. ever never =P

I find the fact they ban them due to wattage abit rediculous, laptops and certainly desktop pc's lets say (600w for a dekstop) probably are much more likely to 'blow a fuse' (are they still really used =P) then a mini-fridge.

It's all a bit odd.

You can get thrown out of halls for breaking the rules. So do it in style:

Buy a rabbit and set it loose in the corridors!
I'm just going to get a cool box and throw some ice packs in it. I mean the only reason anyone wants a mini fridge is for beer anyway, and that does fine in a coolbox if its kept out the sun. I would of liked to of had a mini fridge though, who needs to socialise when you can live in your room.

Do you really need a mini-fridge?! Your kitchen will be ten seconds away. Next there will be threads asking whether the cleaners periodically restock the mini-bar, and what current students think of room service's selection of lobster dishes...
Look, if the Independent guide advocates taking a mini fridge, I'd say go for it...

This.
Noone steals beer from other peoples' fridges. It's just lame and unheard of.
No real need for a mini fridge. One of my friends just hung a bag out of her window all winter full oif cans of coke and chocolate to keep it cool so she didn't have to go to the kitchen.

Seriously though, walking to the kitchen takes a couple of seconds.

You could fuse your room and have no power. My super powerful hairdryer had that effect and took out not just my room but 3 others. Before they would put my power back they checked to see if I had anything like a fridge or a coffee machine!

Spacecam is talking about Manchester halls and all uni accomodation has diferent policies and stuff so wait till you get there and if you can't cope without one then buy one. You need to see how nice your cleaner is first and if you think you can get away with one then buy a discrete one.

thanks for all your response, and the reason i was considering a minifridge is so that i didnt get my fridge items used by others, i dont think it was that unreasonable lol, and it certainly wasnt a laziness issue on my part.

i think i may just line up stuff on my windowsill lol

It might not get used by others. As far as I am aware nobody I live with used my stuff from my shelf in the fridge without asking first. Never noticed anything going missing! Stuff was stolen by people messing out from other kitchens but thats the reason why you should lock the door.
