Finance tips...?

How did you all deal with student finance? Do any of you have any tips for saving money while in university? How much money did you save before you left for university? Did you get a job while you were there?

i had a maximum loan and picked the cheapest place to live so I was quite comfortable financially. I barely drunk alcohol which makes a big difference to how much money you'll spend.
If you consider swapping beer for straight vodka, there is a lot of money to be saved. As silly as it sounds, cost per unit of alcohol in beer is much much higher. I drink 6 bottles of glen's vodka everyday. 25cl for £4.50.
