Hey everyone. I'm a 1st year student who's going to be commuting to uni for a hour or so 😭 I won't be living in accommodation and I don't live in the same city my uni is based in so I won't be around people from my uni either. Does anyone have any experience with this? Especially freshers week since it's going to much more difficult to connect with people due to restictions and it's worrying me that people will make friends even before I have a chance to click with anyone. 💔

Why didn’t you pick accommodation closer? How will you even meet up with people you meet from uni?? Maybe your only choice is to make friends with those local to you since it takes an hour to your uni area

Hello

Hope you are doing well!

I completely understand the worries you are having, because I am also a commuting student in my thirds year now and I felt the same way during first year. I was worried that because I would not be living near university that I wouldn't be able to make any friends, this however was not the case. I just had to make sure that I tried to get to know and make friends with people during the time that I would be at university.

I made sure to join and be active on group chats with people from my course; this allowed me to get to know people beforehand which was helpful. I had originally thought that I would be the only commuting student from my area. However I found that quite a few others from my course were also commuting from the same place, even though we had never met before starting uni. Joining societies was also a good way for me to get to know people from other courses, with similar interests. I did have to make some extra effort when it came to spending time with the friends I made, due to the fact that I would have to travel an hour home whereas they would be back to their accommodation in no time; but I enjoyed it and am glad that I put the effort in.

I wouldn't worry about not clicking with anyone, I am sure that you will be able to find the people that you will get along best with. In my personal experience, I made friends during first year and second year. So do not worry too much, of course I understand that it may be a bit more difficult in the current situation we are in due to lack of face to face events; however do not lose hope. Everyone will be in a similar situation, especially with most things taking place online. My recommendation for you would be to try and socialise with course mates through group chats if you can. Also if you have the time, see if your university or any societies are holding virtual events, as this may be one of the best ways for you to socialise with others at the moment.

I hope I was able to help ease your nerves a bit, university can be a major change; but just know that you will be fine!

If you would like me to elaborate further on anything that I have mentioned, or if you would like to ask me any questions then please feel free. I would be more than happy to help!

All the best,

Shaf

Hey,

I stayed at home during uni, and I was able to make friends through my course, part time job and societies. So, I wouldn't worry too much, try and make an active effort to speak to people for example if you have seminars talk about the work etc.

Also, try and join some societies these are great ways to meet people with similar interests as you. Also, I remember in first year my uni held commuters breakfasts and other specific commuter events and group chats. So, you may want to see if your uni does the same. Also, some freshers events may be online so it will be easier for you to attend.

I hope this helps and good luck!
