Questions about equations

Hello, I have 2 questions about writing equations.

1. When a question tells you to include state symbols (but doesn’t tell you the states) how do you work them out?

2. When given an equation with two compounds (e.g magnesium hydroxide reacting with potassium nitrate) how do you know what that results in?

1) it’s the general equations, so like metal + acid > salt + hydrogen, you know metals are solid ect

2) it’s a displacement reaction so use the reactivity series
