Difference between interference and superposition

In my textbook it says superposition is when two or more waves cross and interference is the superposition of two or more waves, isn't this the same thing? I'm confused.

Yeah you could think of it as cause (superposition) and effect (interference)

what is the actual difference though?

If that's verbatim how your textbook describes it, they've probably forgotten a few words.

Interference is an effect caused by the superposition of two or more waves. Interference can be constructive or destructive depending on the phases of the waves.
