It's currently Week 5 of Summer term at York and the Common Assessment Period has begun and I'm currently taking a break from finishing my Research Design for Social Research Methods by writing this late-night blog update. TL;DR I've been under a lot of pressure and stress (I did speak to my academic supervisor) with meeting the deadlines for my assignments which is next Tuesday at 10:00. Atm, I feel like I was in a better position compared to the start of the week as I honestly feared for the worst, and mentally speaking, my mind is over the place currently with a lot going on, and staying positive about things can be tricky (I'll elaborate a bit later). Tonight, I'm going to take a break before continuing working in the early morning though I don't intend to stay up too late!

The last assignment that I'm actually yet to start writing (JT, why do you do this to yourself?!), but have started planning by gathering resources, etc. is my 4,000-words project for Victimisation and Social Harm which will primarily explore UK child poverty, but will look at international definitions and measures of child poverty just so I'm covering all the bases. The thought of having to write 4,000-words over the weekend + Monday terrifies me, but if I think of it as smaller chunks, that makes me feel better and less stressed.

Anyways, in terms of non-academic stuff, I heard back from Northern Trains regarding the Placement Year interview and unfortunately, they decided not to proceed further with my application. Naturally, I'm gutted and a bit disappointed, but I'm proud of myself for applying for Placement Year opportunities and really giving it my all through the application process. Atm, I'm still considering Placement Year opportunities, with my uni advertising a few opportunities and I need to submit my application for one of them as the application deadline is this Sunday at 23:55 - I'll take some time to sort that out. If the whole Placement Year plan doesn't work out, I'll take it with a pinch of salt and I do have a Plan B in place which is to continue with studies and start Year 3 in September. Accommodation isn't a problem as I have applied for uni accommodation so I should hear from the uni soon, though they did state in an email it will be this week. Hmmm...

Furthermore, I've not really met up with anybody except close friends and friends from a university society committee - we went to the pub last week for pints and a meal outside (before the regs allowed indoor hospitality). Once my assignments and exams are over, I'm planning to do more nice things as I think we all deserve it after an incredibly difficult year whilst keeping myself and others safe. I haven't seen one of my close friends since before Christmas, so it would be nice to see him in person and treat him to a pint or two as I did promise him that for his birthday which has passed (I was still in London at the time).

Moreover, I got all my Spring assignment marks back (one Wednesday and one today) and I did really well. For the Policy Process Workshop Report for the 'Recreating Government Workshop', I got 78% which is a high first and my first ever! This came as a nice surprise as I wasn't sure how my report was looking with a very restrictive word count of 1,000 words - I tried to talk about three policies we've worked on creating and linking in the theories we've learned. Given that we were allowed appendices as we had to refer to our Ministerial Diaries, I took full advantage of that by demonstrating I understand the theory and cramming different sources and **** which my lecturer really liked (we all knew who marked it tbf, but we were assured that there is a second marker in case of discrepancies in marks). His feedback was incredibly encouraging though he made a fair point that I probably went a little crazy with cramming stuff in the Ministerial Diary and said if I made some minor changes, it would've been an even stronger report. For the Social Research Methods workshop tasks (qualitative and quantitative), I also didn't know what to expect as I didn't particularly enjoy doing the tasks and the quantitative stuff took some time to get my head around, but once I understood the content, I was fine. Where to start... I did rather badly with the qualitative tasks which was a surprise, but thankfully the feedback wasn't brutal (some lecturers do enjoy doing that I swear) whereas I did exceptionally well in the quantitative task which was the bigger surprise - the tasks were quicker to do as it was a series of questions on things like T-test and Chi-square test whereby marks are awarded on a points basis a bit like GCSE and A-level. I got 85% for quants and 58% for quals which averaged out to 71% (another first) so thank **** for that. For the quants tasks, I think there was just one marker, but I might be wrong (we had 2 lecturers teaching us the quants content) though I'm pretty sure it was the same lecturer as the Policy Process who marked my quants tasks as he praised my Qualtrics survey which he said was well executed. In the overall feedback, he picked up on a few things on the tasks concerning T-test and Chi-square test, etc. whereby I was just unlucky to have mixed up whether to accept the research or null hypothesis (I did refer back to my notes, but still found it confusing), but everything else was fine thankfully.

Moving forward, I don't know how I feel about the next set of assignments I'm due to submit soon, but although the dream goal would be to get a First by the end of my degree, I'd be happy if I finish this year with a strong 2:1 given everything that's going on. One of my first-year lecturers (she btw) has always been really supportive and engaging and said I have the potential to get a First provided I take on board feedback and nail academic writing in various styles, and I suppose her words has really rubbed in (metaphorically speaking!). My academic supervisor said something similar when I spoke to him on Zoom panicking about the assignment deadlines and reminded me of the uni's measures to protect grades which I'm aware of, but I can't see how it would help me in any way.

It's Week 6 of Summer term at York and I'm not off to a great start. I'm currently trying to complete a 4,000-word project for Victimisation and Social Harm which will primarily focus on UK child poverty though I'll be applying national and international definitions/measures of poverty and other theoretical stuff I've learnt in the module this year. Atm, I'm just under halfway through and I'll be pulling an all-nighter to get it done and submitted by tomorrow. What's slowing the progress down atm is that I need to do some reading on the different forms of exploitation due to child poverty such as the risk of vulnerable children forced into criminality, i.e. gangs and county lines, otherwise the rest of this report is looking rather thin threaded. I have to apply Christie's ideal victim theory, provide a critical account of the harms and needs of my victim group, and end with discussing the policy and practice implications of UK child poverty. Tbh, there's still a fair bit to cover and I'm doing my best to not let that overwhelm me even though I'm starting to feel tired.

As for the rest of this week, I have a 24-hour open exam for my politics module on Thursday which I'm not worried about because I feel like I've done enough research for it, and writing x2 1,250-word essays is nowhere near as bad as this project! What's adding salt to the wound is that it's worth 70% of the module mark for Victimisation and Social Harm which is terrifying given that I got a mid 2.1 in my last assignment (worth 30% of the module mark) - if I can get this done to at least a similar standard or better then it'll avoid pulling down my average year mark.

I'm going to end this update here (I'll probably do another one this week) and pop to Co-Op as I need to get some milk and some snacks to get me through this assignment.
Sorry I haven't been in here in ages - have been reading :colondollar: Good luck with your assignment :hugs: Solidarity with the all nighter tonight...I'm 13 hours into my 24 hour exam and having answered <35% so far I'm gonna be here a while!

No worries, I've not really been active on here except doing blog updates and occasionally commenting on posts around the forum. Good luck with your assessments as well!

At the moment, I still have 3 more sections of this project report (4,000 words) to cover, but I'm definitely feeling the sleep deprivation and exhaustion - I've just been awful with managing my time lately and I've not been feeling 100% mentally with different things going on. I did speak to my academic supervisor about how I was doing and stuff and checked the regs for requesting a deadline extension (it's super confusing) but unfortunately, my case got was rejected. My supervisor said bluntly there's little I can do to challenge the decision and even if I do, it's not worth it. He just told me not to panic and try to get everything done and submitted on time.

Once this annoying project is done, I'll be quite relieved temporarily... I have a 24-hour open exam for politics, but I'll be fine with that.

P.S. I don't know how many cups of tea I've had now, I may not be able to sleep tonight as a result. Here's to a f***ed sleep pattern. Yay! *Sarcastic*

That's nice. There are still a few places in York that I haven't had the chance to properly explore during my time here so I should make some time for it - I've not been to the National Railway Museum before and would love to go. I've also not been inside Clifford's Tower which is currently going through some renovation works - there are hoardings around it for the time being.

Do you have any particular favourite spots in York?

Btw since my late-night update last night, I've managed to submit all my assignments though I'm not happy with the project - it looks rushed and I missed a section out as time was not on my side, but it's better than submitting nothing. I've also had some sleep so that's good, though still feeling a bit tired.

Fairs. York Minister is very nice, though I've not been inside before - I believe you have to pay an entry fee.

Aha thanks! Means a lot given how tough this academic year has been.
I'll be sure to check out your blog.

Nice, I don't know a lot about the Education department itself, but that sounds good.

Yes, I feel that York is indeed a safe city during my time living here as a student as crime rates are quite low which is quite a contrast to being in the capital which is where I'm from.

I've actually applied for uni accommodation for next year though still waiting for an offer to be made, so I'm probably in a good place to talk about this. Tbh, the rent prices aren't great whether you're going with uni accommodation or the private sector, it's just truly bad though the local council and the SU are looking into making rent cheaper for students and implementing regs for student houses, etc.

I would say applying for uni accommodation is relatively straightforward though given that York has a collegiate system, you might want to consider whether you apply for an accommodation with a college that's near your department. From personal experience, it doesn't really matter where you are though I would say that Halifax College is a bit awkward as it's a bit further down Campus West (main campus) and you just need to walk back up towards the sports field, etc. to get to facilities on campus and a regular bus to town. We do have e-scooters and e-bikes around campus and there's a UB1 bus that serves Halifax and campus which runs on weekdays, but it's a low-frequency service.

I hope I've answered your question and not just rambling about accommodation in general. I forgot to mention as well, catering is alright and in terms of getting your laundry done, we have Circuit Laundry who aren't the best - apparently, they've replaced the washers and driers on campus - but, they're quite pricey. I'm currently off-campus this year so I don't know whether the service Circuit Laundry are providing has improved or not.

I've just been terrible at responding to blogs despite reading them :colondollar:
Hope you managed to get your report done on time! I was utterly exhausted around 1/2am but by 7/8 I was a lot more awake haha. It's a shame York didn't have a better extension policy this year - Durham have allowed all summative coursework (eg. not exams essentially) to have a 7 day extension automatically approved due to covid (you just had to apply suitably far in advance ofc), though then again the maths department said they weren't doing that and we would get max 48 hours
Good luck for your exam! Without trying to scare you, make sure you get started on your 24 hour exam on time...I have several friends who left it a few hours to start then ran out of time to finish (though admittedly more STEM than essay subjects) so better not to risk it
No tea, but if it helps I was still up at 10am this morning having started my exam at a similar time yesterday...had a few hours sleep after that so sleep pattern definitely messed up  Will sleep well tonight!
