BTEC covers a range of qualifications at different levels. Level 3 BTEC nationals are the ones at the same level at A level. Like all BTECs they are mostly coursework based and tend to be more rooted in real world applications. A levels are mostly exam based.

The entry requirements for courses are set by the college/sixth form teaching them but entry requirements for A levels are generally higher than for BTECs.
Level 3 BTEC Nationals comes in various sizes, from the size of a single A level to one that is the size of 3 A levels. You can study a mix of BTECs and A levels.

It's very much up to the college, what grades you get and what subjects you want to study.
