my first year of uni is being robbed from me and I cant do anything about it

my last year of high school, prom cancelled, no awards ceremony, nothing. I thought we were nearing the end of this covid thing so I could have some form of enjoyment in this new experience in life. nope, freshers week cancelled, no parties, no clubs, no socialising outside your own flat. Wow, Why did my uni wait till so late to inform us that most things are going to be online? I could have stayed home but now I feel isolated and alone in what is meant to be the best year(s) of my life.

People are losing and have lost their jobs, their lives, their loved ones, their businesses, their healthcare...and it’s the same thief. You are still getting your education, albeit online. Healthcare workers, office workers, teachers, researchers, business owners...so many people are fighting to make it work in the same format you are being asked to work in. I suggest you take a good look at whether or not you feel you want to be the person who showed resilience in times of adversity and got on with it, or if you decided to try and hit pause while the rest of the world was struggling to survive and adapt.
Everyone else is losing out as well. Everyone is making sacrifices. No one is just getting on as normal. The world is a changed place. There is nowhere in the world where what you’re describing isn’t happening. Get real and get on with it. I can’t say much more than that. Difficult to feel sympathy when you see every day the people who have lost everything.

The biggest issue I have is they knew it was going to be online and yet they were happy to let us move into accommodation.
Which is a risk.
Now some students are in lockdown in their flats which could of been easily avoided if they just stayed at home.

If its online only fine but its obvious that they thought about money over safety and honesty.

I absolutely agree
Actually it could arguably have been avoided if people had followed the damn rules. Universities also may have hoped for some F2F teaching to have occurred but have had to change tack due to emerging circumstances.
It won’t be a university wide thing either. Not one university has announced a complete lockdown. This is a case of some students thinking the rules don’t apply.
Don’t moan. I just had to self isolate for two days despite already having had Covid because of bloody track and trace. It’s annoying but I did it, have tested negative and have got on with it. My grandmother hasn’t left the house since February, a family member is set to lose her business, and I face the very real prospect of having to SI again due to my personal circumstances. Yeah, it’s all a bit rubbish but we get on with it. And we don’t make out that we have it the worst of anyone.

Surely everyone knew? You do realise CV19 is still a thing and they have no cure or vaccine? I believe the people who have died and their relatives would feel your pain and inconvenience. Stay strong.

How can you not expect covid cases and outbreaks when there is a mass movement of people into concentrated areas.
You also have to take into account for people not following the rules.

Entire situation could of been avoided.

IT is not our fault that the UNIS said for everyone to come back to campus so they can do face to face, most people are following the rules and if they arent then what do you expect weve been waiting for freedom our whole lives and now we cant have it.

its all relative buddy

Since April it has been pretty clear uni would be online for the first half of the year so I have no sympathy for anyone annoyed that this is what the situation is. Get over it and stop whining, you don't get the chance to party pointlessly it's not a big deal.

Well, you need to look at this differently. It wasn't done to you personally, this has happened to all of us, some people have had horrific things come out of it - try and be grateful for what you do have around you. The pandemic wasn't going to go away over night, so you were fairly naive in thinking your first year would go off without a hitch. Also, stop thinking of university where you peak in life, that's such a toxic mindset and will do you no favours.

I’m second year and I’ve just terminated my accommodation contract and moved back home. Honestly just save up until when this nightmare is over (hopefully by your second year) and then go wild

the human prime is 18-21 if I was to be robbed off all these years then what do you expect me not to be frustrated?
Jobs lost. Families estranged. Life's lost. Be grateful for your health and your opportunity to continue with your studies during this awful pandemic that has stopped the world from all but spinning.

I wasted first and second year and only started to use my third/fourth (current) for life purposes, to no detriment whatsoever. Regrets? Sure, a few, But I'm still doing great and life still rules.

Whining won't fix anything. I'd recommend trying to make the most of what you have (take up hobbies and make use of your new-found independence)

How did you ‘waste’ them? Do you mean by not going out or something?

You were not robbed of anything. You need to change your perspective, things are not all bad. Acknowledge the bad and the good - so things haven't gone to plan this year, okay. What good things have come this year? Who do you have around you that you cherish? Are you in good health? Is your family in good health? What about your friends? Did you laugh today? What simple, good things happened today? Be mindful and practice gratitude. This is bigger than just you and other university students - we all need to work together to get this under control. Think of others.

Okay I wasted them in comparison to my later years (3rd and where I am now, 4th)

Here you only need 70% for a first, but I spent literally all my free time studying. Hobbies? Yeah no, studies. Anyway, I'm not saying it's wrong to study non-stop just to max out your grades entirely, but yeah, the current me considers that a bit of a waste. Heck, my first two years don't count to my degree! (5 year integrated masters in Phys) so rip those years.

1st + 2nd year: No hobbies, no travel, no nothing.

Now in my third year I studied less hard, barely grazed that sacred 70% that was required, but in return I picked up several hobbies, spent 2-3rd Summer abroad hiking around Japan, Portugal and other countries, and did loads of hiking and photography during 3rd year. COVID notwithstanding I did loads 3rd-4th, too.

I actually went out like 3-4 times in 1st with my flatmates. Socially I'm pretty recluse though; I met one of my friends a year ago, the other one six months ago, and my only other friend is an exchange student who left in 1st year. I also don't do lectures/tutorials/etc: Uni is 100% online for moi, always has been, save for the exams which are now also online. Anyway, the social aspect doesn't really apply to me.

Anyway that's my trivia for why I consider my first two years of Uni a waste. To me (at least at the moment) Uni is a vessel for my hobbies, and the course itself is something I would consider something of a hobby, too. By not having any hobbies in the first two years and simply dedicating everything to learning what I already knew at A-Level (or slightly building upon it, slightly...) I don't consider those years to have been particularly worthwhile.

I see, that’s a fair enough point of view tbh. I also love travelling and go at every opportunity (even if I go solo). Which uni do you go to?

Edinburgh. I totally didn't shamelessly pick it because of the free money T_T

You?

TBH no one knew what was going to happen mid-july people were talking about getting back to normal.Your year at uni hasn't been robbed tho, you are still studying 120 level 1 credits presumably...

here's the thing. Their is no travel, no jobs, limited socialising & volunteering opportunities right now. Despite what it might seem you would have wasted the year at home anyway. Its much better to be in your shoes then say of a recent graduate who has graduated into a receding market.

Their is never a good time for a global pandemic, its **** for everyone at every stage of their life.
