Commuting to uni and staying in hotels??

Hey, so I’ve terminated my contract in halls because I was so lonely and only two others had moved in my flat. I’m thinking about commuting and staying over at a hotel for three night a week when I have seminars (4* is about £50 a night in London) and wondering if this is a good idea? It has a really nice gym as well so I could save on the gym membership costs too

So because you're too lonely in halls, you instead decide to stay in a hotel with definitely 0 other students and no long-term residents?

Yes and save up. We’re no longer able to socialise in halls as we can’t go to other flats. In my hall they also closed the common room. It’s a lot of money for a tiny room and little else

Doesn't sound bad, although I agree with previous comments, I am unsure whether this is a sustainable solution in the long term.

Seems a bit expensive but if you can afford it, why not! You might be able to negotiate a discount with the hotel to get an even lower rate if you tell them you intend to use them long term.

and what about finding non students to live with? Like in a spare room with city professionals? Normally these places are quieter and cleaner than student digs.

I wouldn’t be doing this next year but only as long as these Covid restrictions are in place. I’m also supporting a family member at home so it kinda works for me. Also free breakfasts

Does it work out cheaper staying in a hotel than paying rent for that old room?

Well it will be approx £150 a week for around 25 weeks compared to £220 a week for a 40 week contract. I could look for a spare room somewhere but in London anywhere decent is really expensive plus it will be hard to get out of the contract in the event of another lockdown. It’s a little anti social though unfortunately

Yeah it’s quite a lot cheaper and I don’t need to pay for the room during the reading weeks, Christmas and Easter
The more i think about this idea, the more awesome it sounds! Especially for fellow introverted people like me! Esp. If you don’t have lectures every day! Thinking covid and non covid. During covid i don’t even think u need to be on campus!

I think it is an excellent idea. You will save money, and you will live a better quality existence. What about food? It’ll get pretty expensive eating out all time time. Is there any kind of home cooked meal delivery service you can get to your hotel?

Also, if you don’t have lectures on mon or fri, you can save another night in room fees too.

Another factor is cost to get home. Would u drive or take the train? How much would it cost to do twice a week?

Hahaha great minds think alike. I’m not completely anti-social but I can meet friends I have on campus after class so it suits me fine, plus there’s a lot of nice areas to work in the hotel lobby, lounge area with iMacs etc. Which uni do you go to?
Given that socialising is restricted (and may be more so), your family responsibilities, the possibility of on-line only at some point (depending on the university of course) and the financial calculations, it makes sense to me.

Yeah that’s true! I’m planing to take some home prepared food with me for dinner. The hotel also has free food throughout the day and free water/hot drinks. Yeah I’ll be taking the train but I have a rail card so it’s about £25 a week on top for two return trips

Glad you agree, I was thinking it seems a little anti social but at least the room will be much nicer and I’ll even be able to save money

You mean 1 return trip right? £12.50 each way isn’t too bad! Longer term you could probs buy a car and park that in london suburbs (loads of free parking in suburbs), and then drive home. Perks of this would be you can keep extra stuff in car you might need during the week. Saves u having to lug it around on the train home and from station at other end etc .

Yes sorry 1 return trip. That’s a good idea, I might look at getting a car. Guessing outdoor rock climbing is a hobby of yours haha. I like travelling in general so a car would also be great for road trips around Europe for example
Makes sense but I don't envy you at all. I'd be so lonely.

Doesn't sound like a great idea, you would probably get fed up quite soon doing it.
