Well Crouch has scored 14 in 28 games since 2005, but people don't rave on about him. :p:
He's England's best striker, yes, but most people prefer to go on about players they see whored on the front cover of FIFA 08 and whatnot, which plays with their mind and makes them think "oh, that player is automatically excellent all the time and better than the less glamorous players", where in reality, Crouch is better than Rooney for England over and over and over again.

He's good it's just frustrating watching him play because he makes stupid mistakes, and when he scores half of the time he looks like he has mis-hit the ball lol.

He isn't England's best striker as he isn't a patch on Rooney and Owen when it comes to ability. However he's been without doubt England's best performing striker from the last two years and I'd rather have him to Heskey in the squad. That said, he's scored most of his goals against weak opposition.

As for Rooney, given his position, his goals to game ratio for England is alright but he too has scored the majority of his goals against weak sides. The best side he has scored a competitive goal against is Croatia, which was four years ago, against an easily weaker side than he will face tonight.

Haha, in that case I'd rather Crouch played for 45 minutes than Rooney for 90 minutes.

We England fans don't care how his goals come, it's that they do come

What constitutes England's best striker then, if it isn't number of goals? ..

Are you suggesting Crouch is a better player than Rooney?

I said Crouch is England's best striker in terms of how they have all performed in the past two years. Rooney and Owen are still much better players.

And how do you measure a striker's ability?

"Throw the best players on the pitch, they'll do the job".
-I imagine you've said that once or twice, right?

You can't just have him on the pitch because he's good, he has to do a job. One he can't do, is play the role of a striker. So no, Rooney 'isn't a patch' on Crouch, in terms of playing as a striker. Why? Because the latter scores goals. END OF.

If Torres is the Premiership's top scorer, and Dani Güiza is Spain's current most prolific goalscorer, does that make Torres Spain's best striker, or is it Dani Güiza?

Isn't it how you perform for that particular team, what you're judged on? England's "best striker" should surely mean the striker that does the best out of all strikers for England, no?

Player A scores 100 goals for his club, Player B scores 0 goals for his club - they both play for the same club.

Player A scores 0 goals for his country, Player B scores 20 goals for his country and more than anyone else - they both play for the same country.

Player B is his country's best striker.

It is still Güiza however you dress it up. And Crouch is England's 3rd best striker, at most.

Player B wouldn't get an international callup with 0 goals. The countries manager would be underfire for not playing player A in his rightful position. Player A is still the better player.

Doesn't make him a superior player though. That's what I'm getting at. Crouch should be in the squad because he's performed best up front for England in the past two years - doesn't mean he has more ability than Rooney and Owen (who would surely have scored more if he wasn't injured so often).
