After 8 years of dominance by Mercedes and Hamilton, we have massive massive rule changes for this year which could drastically change the pecking order. Originally, there was going to be a complete overhaul of the sport in 2021 in order to make it more affordable and cars able to race closer together however, COVID screwed it up. Whilst the cost cap was still retained for 2021, the new technical changes will come into effect this year.
The major changes area return to ground effect cars for the 1st time since 1982, in addition to a ban on the extravagent suspension, bargeboards and cutout floors from 2017-2020. Also F1 will finally be switching to 18 inch rims (up from their 13 inch rims) and a completely new compound of tyre after Pirelli was forced to use the 2019 tyres for 3 years in a row due to negative feedback about the original 2020 tyres...and COVID. more parts will be standardised and in an effort to even the playing field, the aerodynamic handicap system introduced in 2021 will be more severe in 2022, with each team gaining 5% extra time to design their car the lower they finished in the 2021 championship. This means mercedes will only be allowed 28 hours a week to design their car and the last placed team will be allowed 46 hours a week to design their car,
AR full pull rod, first of the pack but may indicate Ferrari/Haas may go that direction. Looks like a tear drop rear more like the Aston.
Williams are push.
AR is full pushrod. The rod is top mounted on chassis sloping downwards towards the wheels for front and back.
Curious to see if Rb and at have gone pushrod back suspension as it is rumoured RB has gone that route
In anycase, looks like my post from last year about some times going full pushrod isn't looking to be as wild a theory as I thought
For AR I can understand why they went pushrod front as they have a high nose / FW undercut. This in turn would mean a raised chassis, which would mean less of a cog / aero penalty vs pullrod. What is interesting is that the AR pics confirms a suspicion I had about some teams going for a spoon wing in the middle like 2008 in order to get more inward load but also to get a more powerful S duct (s ducts aren't banned don't forget. Likewise capes however the latter there are restrictions).
Will be interesting to see if any teams are allowed to use the 1st element like a (small) bridge wing like the one which was pioneered by the Mclaren mp4/22 in 2007 but lower in line or slightly above the nose.
The proper Williams fw44 shakedown pics are here and... Looks completely different to the show car! Saying that however, the aero looks like placeholder / fake aero and expect it to change quite a bit come Bahrain.
EDIT in case you are wondering about suspension layout pushrod front, pull rod rear.

I heard the car would be red and black but I'm not convinced till we see proper pics (this time yesterday there was a very convincing merc render that was a fake)
Means alpine is the only thing has hasn’t been seen or leaked by my reckoning
Yep.
Also re the supposed f1-75 leak. If it is real, then looks like my theory about the interesting sidepods was correct.
Should be interesting to see how fast it is as the alfa c42 is supposed to be as fast as the sf21. The aero looks like placeholder for the ferrari leak however
Ferrari livestream at 1pm. Sadly you'll have to got 9 their YT channel to watch. The reason the vid is this late is i suspect because they may have done a shakedown test in fiorano (weather permitting)
the leak was real(ish). Sidepods very aggressive up top (definitely rory byrne designed). very unique nose so far (ferrari trolled the nose design by showing the showcar nose up till the reveal). Full pushrod design it appears so far (like AR). the horns are back as well
need more pis for more proper analysis. the main negatives is that the lower sides of the sidepod looks very basic / little udercut compared to AR and AM. also sidepod inlet looks big but am getting AM vibes from it the rest of the car and the colour is very aggressive / sexy colour scheme
The FIA will alternate between using WEC race director Eduardo Freitas and former DTM race director Niels Wittich.
I have mixed feelings about this, whilst the AD safety car procedure was a mess, I think that was more to do with grey areas in the rules than Masi specifically. However all the teams have been calling for consistency and Masi was the figurehead for some very erratic decisions and it's probably best to draw a line under that era.

called it re freitas as a potential. Am worried about Niels Wittich as he has made some collosally bad judgement calls in DTM
Uh-oh. Hopefully they are using the year as a trial period before settling on Freitas then.
considering dtm finale last year made masi's blunder this year seem minor, im worried. Then there is the blatant bribery by merc in 2007 where Merc were taking out audis left, right centre...and audi was getting penalised it was so bad, wolfgang ulrich told all the audi drivers to reire their cars and withdraw from the race. may have been a different race director mind you but still, that left a very very sore impression (hopefully he wasnt in dtm last year or in 2007 but still, very alarming)
