When/why did baring your upper teeth become equated with smiling?

See it so much on TV, and it just looks so false.

Are they trying to show off that they went to the orthodentist, had their teeth aligned, and whitened?

Are they trying to growl and smile simultanesouly, baring their canines?

Or are they just incapable of smiling?

My current hypothesis is that it started as a fashion trend after the Bee Gees.

If your aim was to make me sit at my computer and practice smiling with and without teeth to see which feels more natural, you've succeeded!
And hmm interesting question, not sure but smiling with teeth open is closer to laughing so maybe it's just a 'bigger' smile?

I tend to keep my teeth out when I smile:

Some people just smile differently than others I suppose. Or others just dont understand how to smile...

I love this. I literally sat here smiling with and without showing my teeth while reading it. Defo prefer smiling without baring my teeth, feels more natural and i hate my teeth so...

I have always smiled with my upper teeth showing?? Despite my teeth being pretty crooked. Are you suggesting everyone should do a half-arsed smile without opening the mouth, like when you're embarrassed or smiling at someone briefly in the street..?

I'm waiting for someone to put a snack bar next to the mouth that is gradually eaten.
