If I have dropped out of university but have received the first installation of my maintenance loan, can I keep it and pay it off like normal student debt?

When your university notifies SFE of your withdrawal then SFE will write to you with an explanation of how much of your instalment is an "overpayment" (most of it) and how to arrange immediate repayment of the overpaid amount.

If you cannot afford to repay the overpaid amount immediately then you'll need to contact SFE to agree an affordable repayment plan.

In extreme circumstances SFE can agree to deferring repayment to the same as a standard student loan debt.
