I think you can, but burning a cd would be easier and safer IMO. A floppy disk might even be big enough. Just put word documents ect on it. Everything else you should have on cd.
If you don't have high speed internet you should also save the setup files for programs you need that you have downloaded.
My internet's ok. Also the only one I need (for kazaa lite) I have lost.

I am really concerned mainly about my music.

Well putting all of your music on your ipod would work just as well as anything else. If you can take music off of an Ipod then you could just copy it back to the computer once you have finished formatting.

There are several types of DVD, and so if they're cheapo DVDs, or a cheapo DVD player chances are it won't play that kind of DVD. They have to be compatible.

Basically it won't play any DVD. It knows what the DVD is but won't play it. I also cannot format my computer because it won't read my System Recovery CD. I am totally at a loss as to what to try.

Does anyone know what's doing it?

    Elpaw - I don't think it's codecs.

I got given a few DVDs for Xmas and now my laptop won't play them.

    Why?
Maybe your laptop needs cleaning? What is it not scanning the DVD's or something.

    True.

And I managed to watch Politics by Ricky Gervais and I've started my LOTR extended edition boxset too!

Still annoyed about my laptop though.
