I'm considiring teaching myself GCSE latin, as long as there is no coursework to be marked. M question is, how hard is latin. Can it be learnt in say 9 months of 1-2 hours of study per week?
To get in A gcse latin I tested myself on 100 random words on the cambridge latin course website every morning, I also had four 50 minute lessons every week.
And no, latin has no coursework at all.
edit- it would be very hard teaching yourself the poetry and prose.
Are you starting fromno knowledge at all? If so I'd say it would not be possible in that time. I had 3 or 4 lessons a week and another 4 hours of homework during GCSE and had been learning for 4 years by the time of the GCSE exam although I think it could be done in 1-2 years if you really put the effort in. I would think you'd need access to a Latin teacher though and the set texts would have been near impossible without my Latin teacher. If you really want to do it maybe find an online course or tutor Good luck if you do try it!
Unless you are really interested in Latin, and willing to work hard, then I'd say either find another subject to do, or don't do it and concentrate on your main subjects.
I'd have thought all languages would need some sort of teacher as they have an oral part so you'd need someone to practice with. I have no idea what still has coursework but I'd have thought most subjects would have a no coursework option. What else are you taking?
It took me two years (at college whilst studying A-levels) to go from no Latin at all to an A at GCSE, I'd be impressed if you passed at all without a teacher. It was hard work but enjoyable but needed a few hours per week.
For OCR there is a coursework option but of course no oral examination.
