University of Leeds - Exceptions for entry requirements?

I was looking to apply to Leeds for PPE, which requires AAA. I have the predicted grades of A*AA which is definitely good, but Leeds requires a 7 in maths GCSE, which I was just slightly short of and ended up getting a 6.

I'm wondering the likelihood of getting rejected simply because of a single GCSE grade? The vast majorities of my GCSEs were 8s and 9s, and the A* for my predicted grade is for Economics, which is inherently mathematical. Because of this, I was wondering whether I'd get immediately rejected? Or how significantly that ONE GCSE grade would affect me? My teachers are unsure but told me to be safe and go for a Uni I could definitely get into, but I was quite deadset on applying to Leeds.

Usually where the university has a strict GCSE Maths grade they mean it. If you dont have it you will get rejected. If they require grade 7 it is because they consider you need that Mathematical ability to complete the course. Usually top universities require Mathematics A level at grade A for Economics. Resit your GCSE Maths to achieve a 7 and show it as pending. The university will probably make you an offer dependant on you achieving grade 7 rather than rejecting you.

Thanks for the Idea! No doubt retaking maths for GCSE place considerable strain on studying and revision as a whole, maybe limiting my ability to do as well as I could in other subjects?

Get in touch with the admissions team and see if not having the 7 would be an instant rejection.
Usually they do look at applications on a case by case basis. If you have predicted grades above the entry requirements + a personal statement that wows the admissions team, they might want to meet you for an interview and see if you're a good fit for them despite having the 6 in maths instead of a 7.
I know a lot of people who got into Leeds having not met all the entry requirements. Are you doing A-level maths at all? There's merit in you improving your grade at A-level which is something they'll consider if that is the case.
Either way, good luck. You will get more solid advice from the admissions team! Give them a call or email. Im sure they won't bite!

By all means give admissions a call but usually Maths GCSE grades are non negotiable. A level grades are sometimes accepted with dropped grades Are you taking Maths A level as for most Russell Group universities you will not get in without it for Economics.

Thank you for the advice! I'll certainly call them up. Not doing A-Level maths no, but I called Leeds for example and either becuase they have high intake of calls etc or because of covid limitations, they aren't picking up.
