What do you want most from university virtual open days and online events?

Lots of you have been telling us about your virtual open day experiences and how you have been finding them - and there seems to be a real mixed bag of thoughts on this!

What do you want most from a virtual open day or an event you have booked to understand more about a university?

Is the campus the most important thing, or is it speaking to current students? How best can they present themselves, through pre recorded videos or live streaming? Or do you just need to find out as much as you can about your course?

Let us know your opinions below - and more about your previous experiences too!
Talking to current students on the course I feel is one of the most important things which every virtual online day I've attended has been lacking in .

They all direct you to find someone on uni buddy.. . That doesn't help me as the course I'm interested in (Product design ) there are literally no student on there , much less the university I'm interested in.

For Virtual open days unis really should have live talk sessions / chat with just current students in each subject area. I'm sure they can find at least one embassador per subject. That way we can openly ask them questions no one else can answer.

This I feel is so so important. ! I really want to get to know students honest opinions about the university and the course

Also the idea for having workshops and taster subjects would be amazingly useful to compare. So many unis have the same titles if courses but unless we practically have a taster of the style of teaching we won't ever know

That's so true - at a in-person open day there will be ambassadors for every subject available usually, so it is unfortunate they don't have this for the virtual events as well.

Have you tried asking here on TSR for any current students for your subjects at unis you are interested in? You never know who may be online!

Yeah I think taster events and workshops are a great idea. Has this not been something you have been offered on a virtual open day? How do you get told about the course?

TSR was the first place I came to try and talk to current students. Unfortunately I haven't really been able to find anyone :frown:

The virtual open days I've been to they had live talk sessions about the course but no taster sessions as such where we could physically do maybe a quick task they set and see how the teachers /lectures teach and deliver the content. The most important thing , the feel of the teaching is something which has been lacking

This is what I would expect if I was going to a uni open day-

A chance to observe a lesson
A opportunity to look around campus
A chance to ask questions
A opportunity to meet key staff and students too
A chance to learn more about that particular university
A opportunity to get a feel for the place and course
A chance to record contact information as well
A opportunity to discuss course expectations
A chance to get advice and specific recommendations and tips
A opportunity to find my way around the university
A chance to make notes
Most of all I just wanted a tour of the damn campus, so I can see where everything is! I booked to attend lots of virtual open days, but as they were virtual, I sort of missed them all, and have no idea if they were recorded or anything, so I never caught up on them. I really wish the unis just had links to recordings of all of their open days on the website. And of course with covid, I still have no idea where anything is on campus. I've never even had a lesson there lol
I dread having to actually go in for lessons, because I have no idea what its even like, even though I'm enrolled
What most people want from an Open Day is a sense of what that Uni is like in reality :
* What size is it - big sprawling campus or small cosier site?
* Town or country?
* What does 'my' building/dept etc look like?
* What does the accomodation look like and where is it?
* What does the town/city feel like?

What you need more than anything is visuals - what you would have got if you had had a real Open Day. On YouTube there are some very good films that give you an excellent idea of exactly what the place looks like, and a sense of what each Uni 'feels like'. Here are just a few of the better ones :
