hiiii guysfor people applying to oxbridge, how did you find the CAT/CLATI did the Latin part of the CAT and really can't gauge how well/badly I did at all

I did the latin part as well, I found the prose ok but the verse considerably harder (sort of expected - I really struggle with verse). Not feeling too horrible about it, I would agree that I don't really know how to tell how bad/good it went.

I found the CLAT much harder than some practice papers. :frown: Section B was a doozy!

Hey! I've applied for Oxford (Univ), KCL and Manchester aswell! Hows it going with pre course stuff for Oxford? Good luck for the CAT/CLAT! Also I haven't got offers from any of them either yet :/

Oh sweet! I haven't heard from Manchester or KCL either but soon, hopefully. Finished the CLAT today and written work all sent off!

omg I'm completely the other way round! reading through a translation of the quintilian passage online made me realise Id got the wrong end of the stick several times! but I mean they're supposed to be really hard so I guess thats to be expected

Got an offer from Birmingham today! Attainment (which is basically CCC) if firm and ABB if insurance

omg stop looking over the translations afterwards was not a good feeling :/// But yes I definitely did find parts of the prose so tricky, I don't know why they chose Quintilian lol they could've given us a chance!!
And exactly we wouldn't be trying to pay them 9k a year if we were already perfect at latin so I'm sure you did absolutely fine

Section B I found quite hard aswell, I missed out on a couple of the last questions from there, but I found Section A&C not easy, but also not that hard so I'm not stressing yet lol

Just got an offer from Manchester for classical studies!

Hey guys,
I just wanted to ask, what are you sending in for written work? I'm applying for Classics and English so they want one English essay and one Classics-based essay but I'm not sure the lit crit essays I've written for Latin are suitable

Hey everyone! I'm applying for Classics II at Oxford (Worcester) and Classics at Durham, Glasgow, Manchester and Swansea and I've had offers from the last two. I found the CLAT harder than the past papers as well. It took me a while to understand the language rules but the last few Section B questions were really hard. Question 2 in Section A was especially hard because the language itself is so confusing.

Hey! I'm applying to Wadham. Completely agree! It just took me absolutely forever to figure out the language rules and even then I didn't finish section B. But maybe Oxford knows it was a harder paper? I've heard lots of people had a harder time with it.

Yeah hopefully. If everyone found it hard then it will probably balance out like grade boundaries do.

Hey all!!

I thought it might be nice to start a discussion about Classics and those applying to university to study it (as I haven't seen many threads!). I've applied to read Classics at Cambridge, Durham, Edinburgh, St Andrews and Reading (and I actually got an offer yesterday!).
Is anyone else doing anything similar?

Hi, another future Classicist here! I have applied to Oxford, Durham, Exeter, Edinburgh and St Andrews (for straight Classics) and have so far go an offer from Exeter yay!

Hi  I've applied for Classics at Oxford (St. John's), Durham, UCL and I've already gotten offers from Bristol (AAB) and Manchester (ABB). I submitted my written work to oxford yesterday and I'm worried neither piece is good enough.

After looking up the passages online, I realised I completely misunderstood the Greek verse and Latin verse passages in the Cat. Any else find both verse passages much worse than the prose?

Reply 54

I thought that the verse was so much harder than the prose too. Although, I've not looked either up as I don't want to know how badly I've messed them up lol

Reply 55

Yeah I found them both way harder than the prose, and I also did the Latin verse last (after having already sat the ELAT since I'm applying for Classics and English), which led to me translating 'silva' as silver...... yeah I know, ouch. I'm hoping they'll think I can't possibly be that dumb and give me the benefit of the doubt on being tired.

I'm applying at Exeter college in Oxford, Edinburgh, St Andrews, KCL and Durham (all for c+e) btw, and no offers yet :frown:
