why is it i get marked down for using the same tricks that we analyse in lessons

in lesson one of the things we analyzed was a story where the writer intentionally changes the tense of the writing to make you feel more involved in the action and to raise the tension. but when i decide to use that new technique i found in these pieces of writing, i end up being marked down for changing tense part way through

Perhaps because it's a less standard technique and could, in the examiner's eyes, come across as a mistake? I can see your frustration, but it isn't the most obvious technique and many students would do that through incapability rather than intention.

Maybe you didn't use the technique in a way that improved the quality of your answer.

Also, you can't get marked down because examiners must use positive marking.

it wasnt in an exam, it was in lesson and i did get marked down
