What's the relationship between pharyngitis and rheumatic fever?

Are they the same thing? Does one come after another? Is it like the HIV -> AIDS thing?

Rheumatic fever can follow pharyngitis, which is why you have to try and prevent that happening.

No, not the same thing. Pharyngitis is a sore throat, thematic fever is a disease that affects the heart, joints and other organs. The latter can be a complication of a throat infection caused by Strep A (a type of bacteria).
