London Student Accomodation

Alright, so I've just sent in my UCAS form and I've applied to UCL, but I'm still not 100% on how accommodation works. I've clicked that I won't be living at home, because I don't live in London, but what does that mean? Can I still choose to rent a room of my choosing if I get an offer? Is there an exhaustive list of all the accommodation UCL offers first-year undergrad students? Do I have to live in halls? What even is halls? What if I don't like any accommodation offered? I'm sort of confused on that whole thing.

Let it be known that I have actually done research into this, I'm not going into my applications completely blind, but this is just really, really confusing, mostly just because it's London - I don't really have that problem with any of the other Unis I'm applying to because accommodation there is cheap enough that I don't mind going through the school process, but in London it's a different story.
You don't have to live in halls, but UCL have halls that match most budgets, so it's worth it in my opinion so you meet fellow first years. You can specify a budget, and they will try to match it, although won't guarantee it. This is a good link to the main questions: https://www.ucl.ac.uk/accommodation/prospective-students/undergraduates

And this is the list of self catered halls, the halls on the Camden site like Max Rayne are the best value: https://www.ucl.ac.uk/accommodation/ucl-halls/self-catered-accommodation

I've already seen these, but I still don't really understand this part - if I decided I didn't like any of their accommodation, can I still find a flat by myself?

If you don't like the look of any UCL accommodation, simply don't apply for accommodation. It doesn't make any difference to your application to the university itself.

If you do apply for UCL accomodation, they will offer you a room in a specific named hall shortly after your place is confirmed following A Level results. If you don't want the room they offer you, you can reject it, but then it's up to you to find a room privately. They won't offer you another UCL room.
