Learn to use whatever software they want to work on then apply for an entry level software engineering job.

- Learn a programming language and get familiar with the basic constructs of whatever language you choose. Build some toy applications, e.g. todo lists, calculators, quizzes, etc.

- Learn enough computer science so that you can pass software engineering interviews. Topics you'll want to learn are: algorithms, data structures and computer architecture. You can solidify your knowledge by practicing questions on websites such as Leetcode and Hackerrank.

- Apply for internships, then focus on getting an entry level software engineering job.

Take a computer science course if that's what you want to learn about

i would recommend an online series of lectures, a textbook and some exercises.
the MIT introduction to algorithms course is quite detailed and well presented; https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/electric...ecture-videos/

you may be interested in a dual engineering and computer science degree. e.g. http://www.bristol.ac.uk/study/under...d-electronics/
