I'd say they are much of a muchness to be honest. Perhaps down to personal choice as to what else each university offers?

Hmm, I was surprised that Newcastle is Russell, more fool me!

One answer might’ve been, in the old days, that the graduate recruiters are busy around London and the M4, and only rarely venture up the M1, and some sort of inverse-square of opportunity vs distance from W1A 1AA post-code.

Nowadays a lot more recruitment can be done by you, using interwebs & tools like linked-in, so it’s down to forensically comparing and contrasting each module, each professor & assistant profiled at each place. (Compare the course detailed information with your own specific interests) End up with a wall of evidence , or perhaps just a spreadsheet workbook.

Newcastle and Sheffield Unis both joined the Russell Group at the same in 1994. Newcastle holds Gold TEF status and Sheffield holds Silver. Both very good universities.
