I have applied to four universities (Cambridge, UCL, King's and Glasgow) to study history and want advice on which to apply to as my fifth and possible back-up.

1. I want to study at a city rather than campus-based uni.
2. Grades of AAB or ABB.
3. To have a reasonably good reputation and ranking.
4. To be an exciting place to live with a gay scene and also cultural/historical stuff.

Sheffield, plus you could consider Leeds. It's a campus uni but only a 10 minute walk to the city rather than being stuck on top of a hill 2 miles away.

Manchester or Bristol if you qualify for a contextual offer

Gay scene - Brighton. But both Unis re campus based, you might have to compromise.
Brighton - https://www.brighton.ac.uk/courses/s...y-ba-hons.aspx
Sussex - http://www.sussex.ac.uk/history/unde...ate/prospectus

Bristol (ABB Contextual) - https://www.bristol.ac.uk/study/unde...ry/ba-history/
Oxford Brookes - https://www.brookes.ac.uk/courses/un...duate/history/

University of Liverpool matches what you want I think. Its a city uni with a great social scene (and gay scene), and has a good/very good reputation.
