uni assignments - word counts and what to include

I've been at uni since sept 2004 now, and I've done a few assignments. However, I have a few questions regarding possible mistakes that I've made. Any answers are appreciated to put my mind at rest, even though I can't get completely relevant answers if students from other unis (if those with experience reply that'll be good) in other years with different lecturers etc reply but still you're feedback is appreciated. I'm not sure if I should post this here or in the uni discussion section.

1) Is it ok to go over word limits? It was said that for one coursework we did that you can go over the word limit by 10%, and it seems like everyone thinks this counts as being allowed for any assignment. For one group assignment me and my group did, we went over the word limit by 16 words (much less than the 10% leway as this assignment was 2000words). This assignment was handed in as a phsyical copy so I doubt the marker counts the words, do lecturers see this as something you will lose marks over/will this be something marks are lost for in my case? This lecturer seems pretty lenient (but can be strict and has been strict too), but hasn't said anything about word count limits. Although I doubt he will count the words due to time constraints but the word count on the front cover might influence his actions...

2) Also, our lecturer for another module told us of a concept used (in accounting) in figure and trend comparisons. Fair enough, but nothing was explicitly stated that this HAD to be done. My lecturer said that you don't have to do it if you don't want to, but it's recomended (although I practically did this but I didn't use the conventions for the concept the lecturer explained nor did I give any full analysis on this method and what I found out - the same findings as I had anyway - because my word count was nearing the limit). Does it matter (in terms of marks) if things like this aren't included, which weren't asked for either (not in the briefing on the assignment, either)?

Thanks
