i understand the process of meiosis but how many gametes are actually made on average in total? this is a bit weird but is it actually only 4? because i thought when a guy 'finishes' there are trillions of sperm cells racing to the egg lol

for 1 process of meiosis it is only 4 non-identical daughter cells. But meiosis happens a lot which is why there are lots of sperm during ejaculation.

Only one sperm wins the race tho and fertilises the egg. And yes the answer is 4

Not trillions - only tens of millions. Although each spermatocyte only produces 4 sperm (by meiosis), there are so many spermatocytes, constantly renewed, that an adult male produces thousands of individual sperm every minute.
