I am currently in the process of applying for an undergraduate course in Biology/Biological Sciences for 2021. I am predicted A*A*A and ideally want to study all aspects of biology during my first year before specialising any further.

With Open Days and university tours all moved online, choosing the right university for me - without the chance to visit and get a feel for any campus - has become rather tricky. University league tables largely vary and don’t paint the full picture.

Which universities outside London have a good reputation for being amazing in Biology? Which are the unis that come straight away to your mind for a Biology degree? Which are target unis for employers in this field?

My main criteria are:

• University with a solid reputation in Biology and in general
• Campus university
• Good work-life balance
• Sociable fellow students
• High employability after degree

Many thanks!

imo your criteria of a good work-life balance and sociable fellow students fits any uni ; and life's what you make it so if you want a work life balance and socialising with many students in your course and in other courses in societies - don't be afraid to make the first move

about having a "solid reputation" does this anything to do with league tables (which I personally stopped using) or 'Russell Group' (RG=research, research is more commonly done at post-grad level, not better or high quality in anyway) or 'old vs newly built university' ??

have you compared course modules for every uni that offers bio and seen any that really sticks out that interests you or ones you aren't interested in ?

for a good feel of the campus McGinger has found some good youtube videos of many universities and has helpful tips for narrowing down uni choices

Thanks for that! By ‘solid reputation’ I mean uni names that come straight away to everyone’s mind for studying Biology. Same as Warwick and LSE do in Economics.

There aren't really any universities with a reputation for biology (with biology being such a broad science). Cambridge comes to mind, but you've obviously missed their deadline.

I'd advise you just find the top universities on every ranking website, look through their courses and at their universities and decide which you like.
