GCSE English at C needed for university

ok guys i need some advice i am going to apply for university, for an economics course but i dont have GCSE English at grade C. I did a resit but ended up with another D which was two marks off a C, i decided to get the paper remarked and i should have my results by november the only thing is i asked business course tutor if i could resit english just in case the result comes back as a D, but it came back the english department does want me as i failed the resit. What should i do?. And if i dont have GCSE English how badly will it affect my chances of getting into university or a good one?.

I got GCSE English Language D and Lit C, I managed to get in to my course on them grades, but mine is a very practical course, so this was probably overlooked.

My Advice: Resit, and put all the effort in you can, or ,theres companies like LearnDirect that do Level 3 English Courses that are equivalent to a Grade C in English Language, these only take a few months to complete, but not all Uni's accept them... I'd look into exactly which Uni you're thinking of going to and seeing what they ask for, I know its a long way off, but it'll save you a lot of hassle in the meantime.

Trust me... I was filling out my Uni Applications and it was only then (4 years later) that I realised that I got the D in Language, and not Literature which I thought it was in... very scary discovery. Had to ring around all the places I'd applied begging to get them to let me in with what I had.

i might look into that the learn direct course, but the remark could come back as a C (PLEASE GOD!!). Next time i am in college i am going to have talk to the head of english and beg her to let me on the resit!!!!

Im sure they can't refuse to allow you to resit.

If they do resit as an independent candidate.

It depends what course you're going after. arts/Humanities courses tend to require a C in English whereas Sciences/maths/computing/business courses are more concerned that you got a C in maths.

ok, thanks for the advise
Personally I'd resit. Most employers look for a grade C in English, even. :frown:

Definitely get that C if you can; it will matter to employers as well as universities, so it's worth the effort.

The thing is i did really well at other subjects at GCSE like an A in science and I.T and B in maths but for some reason i hated english and found it a struggle which has reflected in my results of getting grade D twice. I am currently studing a BTEC National Diploma and precidted DDD which is the same as three A levels at A grade and gives me 360 UCAS points for applying for university. So my academic abilty is i would say fairly ok, accept from english.

I don't know how much information you have gathered about doing Economics at uni with BTEC but many unis don't accept BTEC when it comes to the Economics dept. I done BTEC national award in business when i took a gap year although i got AABB in A-levels and already got in uni, lol! When i applied to unis none of them bothered about the BTEC!

The national award is the lowest type of BTEC you can do its basically like doing a GCSE (No wonder why they were not bothed). The BTEC National Worth 3 A levels if you do well, i have been doing some research and most major universitys accept them besides Cambridge and Oxford which focues on the more traditional A levels.
Oh thats cool then, the 1 i done was equivalent to 3 A-Levels as well but i only done 1 year just to get some experience in the business side of Economics. I'll show you the entry requirements of the unis in London for economics:

1) Queen Mary-

BTEC National Certificate (12 units)

BTW don't think that i'm trying to put you off, just showing that to do Economics at a good uni, english at GCSE must be C or above, and that many unis don't accept the BTEC...just don't understand why!

Ok sure, hertfordshire accept BTECs for their economics courses and its a fairly good university.
Thats good then!

Hope everything works out for you:biggrin:

Also the information you have for Queen Mary is (pre-september 2002), the gudie lines UCAS sets for BTEC grades changed after that date and they are now widely accepted.
tbh, I can't see many universities accepting BTECs. Why didn't you take A Levels?

The pre-september 2002 is for the 1st 1. For BTEC National Diploma it hasn't changed.
