I've heard RetailBanking is quite reasonable with hours. But surely that's hard to get into??

That's bull-you-know-what.

You decide how much you work when you negotiate your contract. The "time vs. costs" pitch is very appealing to employers.
im sorry but to me it just sounds like your lazy...

wanting the money handed on a plate without the hard work that comes with it...if thats what you want out of a career, you should seriously reconsider some options in your life
Is that 28,000 starting salary? If so, you're unlikely to find many. From what I hear, teaching is usually reasonable hours (if not always strictly 9 til 5) but you wouldn't be earning that sort of money for a few years.

Eh? Kinda over-reacting, dont you think?

The OP was asking for a 9-5 job; that's hardly a lazy attitude.

But to do well in a career...and get far, therefore by achieving those girls of a good salary you need to put in that extra time, if you come in at 9, and go home at 5...you simply won't get noticed. Life isn't scheduled and it involves that extra work to get far

lazy because I'd rather work 35hours:rolleyes:

I am planning on having a family when I am older and would like to spend a lot of my time with them rather than in an Office. My priorities are very much in order thanks.

I knew I'd get one comment like this. I'm not saying omgggz i want 100grand and an easy job. I'm talking about £28,000? What's wrong with wanting a 9-5 job?

I'm not one of these major ambitious types wanting to make as much money as I can. Sorry if that makes me LAZY

well if you want a family, go part-time..thats what everyone else does. Im sorry but simply wanting a DECENT and DESERVED wage yet only working very little hours (eg 35...) just won't do you justice, employers don't like those who are not willing to do the extra work at home, extra hours etc..so you simply won't get that deserved wage
Get a job in France?
The issue is that in order to get a better salary, and get promoted, you need to put the work and the hours in.

If you do a job you love, then you won't mind doing it.

Until recently I was paid above what you've posted, and I often found myself in the office at 5am and sometimes didn't leave until 11pm. However, I loved the job and it was a buzz. I wanted to go to work, I wanted to meet my deadlines and I wanted to increase profits. I have a family too.
have you seen the jobs market at the moment? Graduate jobs (other than law, medicine etc) are starting at 17k, thats for people with experience...

trust me, i work in recruiting, no one is gonna pay you any more without 2-3 years of experience.

Need to be at the very top of your academic game though, even if you want to work at a middle-ranking university. Plus, compared to careers like law, when you consider the amount of effort needed, the financial rewards aren't that great really: i.e. start at around 30k and at the very top of the field are 50k. With research and teaching to do, the hours wouldn't be that short either.

That isn't true at all. It's a lie that we live in a meritocracy; those that work the hardest aren't necessarily the ones that are paid the most. And the people who are paid the most usually do quite little, as they just have oversight over those beneath them and do little else.

I'm going to be stuck then since there's nothing I enjoy enough to work much over 9-5 :/
