How many significant figures do I round to?

I'm downright sick of mark schemes. One minute they want 2 d.p, next minute it's 4 significant figures and then before you know it, it's standard form. I have tried basing my answers on how many s.f. are used in the question and so on, but cannot find any correlation. My answers are literally correct but I'm dropping marks left right and center for seemingly no reason. I really am not prepared to miss a grade 9 in my physics exam over two decimal places. Can anybody please provide any tips or advice about how I get the odds to be in my favor for this gamble? Thanks in advance.

Generally during a question, I wouldn't round and would just keep the numbers that you calculate. Then for your answer, I would round to the number of significant figures that it either asks for or are used in the question.
