In terms of alternative meals, he could try to make up a bunch of simple pasta dishes. It's fairly cheap, easy to make and probably a lot healthier. You could also suggest healthier cereals like cheerios or cornflakes. Or granola if he's feeling especially healthy. You could suggest that he doesn't have to give up his unhealthy foods altogether, but that he should limit it so that he only eats unhealthy stuff on weekends or smth.
