Do you know any books that would be good for a degree in English language/linguistics?

I'm a hopeful linguistics student and honestly, anything by David Crystal is a good start! (I.e. "A little book of Language")
For internet language, Gretchen McCulloch's "Because Internet" is a must have.
"You just don't understand" by Deborah Tannen and "The Guardian Book of English are all very interesting reads!
The language of advertising by Angela Goddard is an equally good read!
