Is first year marking very lenient?

I ask because I've had two essays back now where I've basically been ripped to shreds for not answering the question or being so confusing they have no idea what I'm talking about. Mostly fair enough, some of it is a bit obtuse but postgrads have a right to be grumpy, but my confusion is that they still gave me a 16 and a 17. Which unless I just can't understand the grading system is about a mid-to-high 2:1, right?

Just seems odd to get feedback which implies that there are no redeeming qualities to what you've written but it's worthy of a grade that you'll be totally happy with???

So do they just mark first years very leniently or do markers just like to complain?
