A 3kg mass rests on a rough horizontal table. It is attached to a long string that passes over a smooth pulley at the end of the table and is tied to a mass of 5kg which is held at rest in the air, 20cm above the ground. The 5kg mass is released from rest. The 3kg mass experiences a constant resistance to motion of magnitude 12N.
a. Draw and label a diagram showing all the forces acting on the system.
b. Work out the tension in the string and magnitude of the acceleration of the masses.
c. Work out the speed at which the 5kg mass hits the ground.
d. Work out how far the 3kg mass travels in total before it comes to rest.

That’s part a but im struggling with part b, c, d which are 4,2,4 marks respectively

That looks about the right. So what do you get for the forces acting on each mass. That should give you two equations to get the tension and acceleration.
