I went for the kiss and she accepted, is this a big deal or just 'fun psychical flirting' with no real strong meaning?

Depends on your situation? Have you been interacting for some time, like 2 dates or know each other before? Then I think that would be a big deal. But if you've just met and its your first date then I don't think it has any meaning.

Just my opinion.

She was a childhood sweetheart who reached out to me many years later, we met and then I went for it while we were talking.

Its obviously a good sign but I wouldn't say a big deal, this happens on most first dates at some point. It would have been very awkward if you got pied.

Play your cards right and you have a good chance of it becoming a sexual relationship.
Play your cards wrong and you'll have a good chance of it turning to nothing.

So, after kissing her, did you back off and go back to flirting with her?
Did you take her to another location?
And then kiss her again, with an escalation of hugging her as you kissed her?
All as part of getting to know each other and you taking the lead in escalating things?

She let me kiss her, then we just carried on watching TV with my arm around her.

Next time escalate more. For example by moving on to massaging her shoulders.

And why was the TV on in the first place? Why weren't you doing something more active? Something more fun / imaginative / interesting?

I was round her place, we sat talking without TV on and sipping tea, she then went on sofa and put TV on, then later the kiss and my arm around her. But yeah maybe I should have escalated.

Next time, try to take the lead more.

For example, whilst sipping tea, or after kissing, suggest going for a short walk in a positive enthusiastic way. Don't make a big deal of it if she doesn't want to go because it's too cold or wet or something.

It sounds like she was very much open to making love with you.

To be fair afterwards she texted me: 'A bold James would be good' 'a more talkative James would be good'

That's fine. She's giving you feedback on what she's looking for.

So next time you see her, take the lead a bit more. Not in an arrogant jerk kind of way. But in a positive enthusiastic kind of way.
