Hello.

Firstly, Hughes Hall only started admitting undergraduates about six years ago. Compared to postgraduate students, they are in the minority.

Secondly, their library is TERRIBLE. It is small and full of naff pine bookcases that wouldn't look out of place in an IKEA stocked with items hand-crafted by autistic children.

Thirdly, their head of admissions (Mike) is rather aggressive.

Of course, they are building a new set of buildings over by the cricket grounds, which is supposed to have a lot of ensuite rooms and a proper library. Think that is due to be ready in 2004.

It's quite out of the way for the town centre compared to other colleges.

It used to be a woman's college...

Computing provisions seemed quite decent considering the size of the place.

The grounds are small and you can walk on the grass. There is no chapel. Most of the accomodation is in modern blocks of flats. Nothing fancy.

There really is nothing to recommend it over the other mature student colleges - Wolfson, St.Edmund's and Lucy Cavendish (if you are female). They are all quite out of the city centre but nothing you can't walk.

St.Edmund's is a nice enough college. Bigger with more undergraduates, though IT provisions aren't as good. You get ethernet in your room, though. The rooms are a nice size with lovely views over Cambridge if you are in the tower. Also has a nice hall for dining. Hughes' hall is just a little room with some nice tables.

You may wish to look at the "normal" colleges. Don't think that a mature college will be easier to get into - it won't. Considering your age, you won't be THAT much older than the other students. Average age at Hughes is probably around 35 or so. You may not be comfortable with that.

You may want to attend the Summer School. It's very good. http://www.cam.ac.uk/cambuniv/undergrad/fe/index.html This site has more details. Sarah Barnsley is a GODDESS and will provide you with answers to any and all of your questions.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask them here. I may have an answer or two.

I think Hughes is one of the best Colleges in Cambridge; it is small (admits about 380 students, most Post grads) but quite freindly college. I know Mike Franklin......, he intimidate you like you are nothing--- allpart of OxBRIDGE system; but he is not terribly bad if you appreciate quirckly sense of humour.

The chap above, mate, next year Hughes Hall would be one of the most attractive college in Cambridge, the new buildings facing cricket ground would be impressive and the grounds will be ravashing to look at.

By far the best Graduate College in Cambridge and the oldest of them all and actually it is not that far from the centre-- 9 mins walk. The Kelsy karridge is just 1 minute away from the college which means all the sports facilities of the University is there.

The SPS DoS is really good Dr. She is just a champ Dr Carla Sharp is her name. I have been told that she is psycologist of some sort.

Adam, is that so? I think Hughes is fine college but it is not the best College in Cambridge. It be arguably the best Graduate College in Cambridge because as you have mentioned it is the oldest.

I am at Downing and my girlfriend is indeed at Hughes; quite a freindly bunch they are.
