UWE Bristol or University of Surrey for Creative Music Technology?

What the title says. All my other choices are pretty firm now, it's just deciding between these two. I'm learning towards Surrey, though of course Bristol is in Bristol... if it's any help, my main priority will be the network.

Hey, my partner studies Music Technology at UWE (you may want to call it that instead of Bristol, because Bristol Uni is a uni in its own right, of course). He very much enjoys the course, as it gives you opportunity to branch into what interests you - which for him is definitely more the tech side of things. Bristol also has lots of live music going on in the city itself, if that matters to you at all. I can't think of what you'd want to know, so if you have any specific questions I can go and ask my partner those questions specifically and get you back some info.

Well, I guess my main question would be- whats the community like at Surrey? I'd like to go somewhere where I have lots of opportunities to meet and connect with people so we can help each other find work in the future. If I'm being honest, that's one of my main priorities.

Thank you, appreciate that (:
The content between both courses seem pretty similar, so I guess my main question would be the same. What's the community like there? What opportunities are there to meet people to collaborate with? Thanks

Hi there,

I really love the community here at Surrey, I have had a positive experience with meeting and connecting people within the university and outside the university. As Guildford is only a 35 minute train journey from London, so the connection here is really handy if you ever had a placement in London or work in London. Furthermore, there is also a employability and skills centre that can help you with your CVs, Interviews, Cover Letters to make sure they are up to standard to apply for the best jobs whether that's placements, part-time or even starting to apply for graduate roles.

In terms of the community at the university between students, there is a variety of places you can go to where you will be able to socialise and make new friends. Obviously that is hard with COVID-19 at the moment. For example there is The Nest where you can go and chill, sit with your friends have a chat or there's different food facilities like Wates House and Starbucks. To also broaden your network of people you know, I definitely suggest joining a society you are interested in, as this will be a brilliant way to make friends in your first year and also helps you to have different networks of friends such as friends on your course, friends in your accommodation and friends from societies

I hope this helps,

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Surrey has an excellent reputation. It’s also the home of the world class Tonnmeister degree and GSA one of the UK’s leading acting/musical theatre courses.

There are also numerous other music & performing arts colleges in Guildford so quite a community to network with.
