do you need a reference from a sixth form during the application process for the RAF? if so, does it need to be specifically tailored to the purpose, or can it be a general reference?

You wouldn't need to supply the actual reference just the name and address of someone that is willing/able to reference you, ie. a tutor or head of year or something, the RAF will right to them in due course and ask them to supply the reference then. I guess there could be a specific situation where you could be asked to supply the reference earlier if the need arose, but you'd be told that if it was the case.

So answer is no, all you'll need is the name and address of your referee.
