Hi, what subject is this?
I do sociology A level and we study about the four types of masculinities (Connell) and one of them is the hegemonic masculinity, which is the traditional masculinity (e.g. breadwinner, authority figure, etc.). Men are socialised into hegemonic masculinity and this makes men feel proud of themselves (as if they're heroes), etc. After the industrial revolution, many of the manual jobs like mining started disappearing and being replaced with jobs in technology and these jobs were mainly taken by women and therefore this has created a gender quake ('feminisation of the workplace') and men (especially working class men that used to work in mining, factories, etc.) turned into crimes, domestic violence, depression, drinking, etc. and this is mainly because terms like 'breadwinner' and 'authority figure' didn't apply to them anymore which affected their self pride.

So just to summaries: 'breadwinner'= allows men to have a self-pride and feel like heroes

Also, these terms and the expectations of men are socially constructed (society created them)and therefore men believe that they should conform to these things in order for them to be 'good man', 'good husband', 'good father', etc...

Hello

This is a plan to follow.
Explain the role of young married men in society and touch briefly on stereotypes etc. Give explanations and quote examples from the past as solid evidence to show your understanding as well. Do more reading and research online into men from other foreign cultures and different parts of the world too. Make brief notes. Use them as a source of fodder for your entire assignment. Outline exactly what a breadwinner is in addition and name some famous men who successfully manage to make it all work.
