Hi I’m currently doing a foundation course at UCA Farnham and I’m choosing what unis to apply to. I’m looking to do a Film Production degree and these are the unis I’m deciding between:AUB (not Bournemouth uni, I heard AUB is cilect approved and better)Leeds Leeds Beckett Portsmouth Edinburgh Edinburgh Napier Aberystwyth YorkNottingham Trent Gloucestershire (If anyone has any other recommendations please lmk too) I know the uni I’m at now has got a good reputation for film but I hate the location and I don’t personally love the teachers here. Location and the overall uni experience is pretty important to me, I want to have fun at uni, that’s why I’m not looking at any places in London like Westminster or met film school I want to go somewhere with good nightlife and accommodation too. But any advise on which uni to choose or past experiences from students who go to any of the unis I’m looking into would be great!

I’ve applied to AUB and I’d definitely suggest giving it a go. It’s kind of difficult if you’re not applying to London film schools/Unis cause that’s where most of the good ones are but I’d suggest Reading perhaps?

I always looked at how the uni cared about the future of their current students and the facilities they had. Also, I wanted quite a hands-on, practical course so I always looked at the weighting between theory and practical lessons. When applying I had to choose AUB, Bournemouth Uni and the screen and film school in Brighton. Ultimately I chose SFS due to how practical the course was and how the teachers cared about their students The night life and overall vibe of Brighton is also great !

Yeah I’m also looking at a course that isn’t too theory based as well, I’ll have a look at Brighton, thanks.

Hi jade1624,

I am currently a 3rd year student at Aberystwyth University and I am really enjoying my time here. Aberystwyth is a great place to be a student, there is a great feel to the town and there is always plenty to do and see. The University has a very friendly and welcoming feel and has even been named Welsh University of the Year for 2020 in The Sunday Times Good University Guide. The teaching quality is very high, The Sunday Times Good University Guide has been named the University of the Year in 2018 and 2019 for Teaching quality.

Looking at the modules offered at each university is a really good way of comparing the courses to see which may interest you more. This is something I did when comparing universities when I applied and definitely helped me make my decision. It may also be worth looking at how each course is assessed, to compare which style of assessment may suit the way you work best. Rankings are useful to look at, but it is also important to think about how the course is suited to your interests and what you are going to get out of it.

The town is well known for being a very safe place to live and has a very friendly atmosphere attracts many students here, including myself. Although Aberystwyth is a small town the nightlife is great, there a lot of pubs as well as cocktail bars and two clubs. It is very reasonably priced, especially when compared to a lot of the cities. There are lots of cafes and shops, as well as several supermarkets (Tesco, Morrisons, Lidl, M&S and Iceland) that are all very accessible. There is plenty to do in the surrounding area as well with Snowdonia National Park on the doorstep and Birmingham, Cardiff and Shrewsbury are very accessible for a day trip.

I hope this helps with your decision; I am happy to help with any further questions you may have 😊

Rebecca

hi Jade

You should have a look at the TV Production course and / or the Film Production course at Solent Uni in Southampton. I do TV there and I have to say the facilities, the tutors and the support is all great. Just recently we've had masterclasses from some amazing industry people (i'm talking Oscar / BAFTA winners Zooming in from Hollywood) and lots of contact with graduates from the course all working in the TV / Film industry now. Have a look at it!

Hi,

I'm studying second year of International Business at the University of Portsmouth. I was just like you when I was applying! Location and experience was a major factor when deciding which university to firm. I'm going to outline my experience, but please remember to base it on your own choice as everyone's experience differs!

When it comes to location - I love it! It is a city-based university, however, everything is close to each other. The two furthers university buildings are approximately 10-15 minutes from each other. The city itself is amazing there are many things to do. There are many shops, there is a commercial shopping centre near the accommodations and Gunwharf Quays shopping outlet. There are many different student nights and many clubs. We have many societies and something called 'Purple Wednesday' where on this day every society goes out to party. Wednesday's are usually themed, so it's amazing to see every society with a different theme! We also have a train station near the accommodation so really easy access to other places.

Hopefully, this pandemic will be gone soon so everything can go back to normal.

The accommodation is great, there are many to choose from! Teachers are amazing and you get a tutor so if you have any problems it is easy to talk to your tutor.

Do you have any more questions? I'm more than happy to answer them for you!

Leeds and York have very good courses...possibly more academic than the others. Edinburgh has very few places indeed so very hard to get into and was not impressed by their facilities. Good luck!

Thanks for answering, do you have any recommendations on what the best accommodation is for Portsmouth students. I’m looking for a place which is good for socialising and parties and that isn’t too quite with not much going on but is also in a good location, thanks : )

I just really don't like the location. There is nothing to do here. There's a few pubs but that's about it. The student accommodation isn't very nice either. If you don't mind being in a quite town then I'm sure you would like it but it's just not for me, I'm looking to have some fun at uni haha.

Hi! I got accepted to AUB for BA film and Edinburgh Napier. I'm still thinking between which one to choose, as they both are pretty good. Which uni are you thinking of deciding?

Hi! jade1624

When I was in my first year I stayed in Rosalind Franklin halls:
ensuite
shared kitchen/living area
single bed
mid-range price

It's right opposite one of the main clubs in Portsmouth. This was beneficial as you could look out from your bedroom or kitchen window and see how long the queue was to get in, so you didn't have to wait in a long queue or get there too early. This meant a lot of pres happened in our halls, which was great as the kitchens are one of the biggest out of the halls in Portsmouth. All halls are about a 10-minute walk to uni buildings and shops.

Catherine House is similar, as it's opposite a different main club, just more expensive as it is newer and has double beds.
Trafalgar also slightly looks onto the same club as Rosalind Franklin does. The last time I checked it was cheaper and have double beds now.

I hope this helps!
