If I am understanding your right you want to go and visit outside of visiting hours. This is normally the same for all wards. They aren't locked they just don't let people in to visit the patients. If you can't make it during visiting hours then it might be worth contact the ward and asking if you can arange something. You might be lucky.

I"d agree with this. I was training to be a nurse and on placement the visiting hours were quite strict to ensure the health ( and recovery ) of the patients . You could try phoning the ward and speaking the manager/ sister in charge explaining that you cannot make the visiting hours and he/she *may* be willing to bend the rules just this once. Also, no visitors were allowed during meal times .

Yeh unless you have an amazing excuse as to why you can't go during visiting hours (and your friend must alert the ward of this) then you cannot go outside of the visitng hours. The patients need rest.
